I know there's never been much here before, but I finally decided to put something up! :-) Here's an essay I wrote for
school for my local VFW. I won third place for it.
Is Freedom Really Free?
Is freedom really free? If you really think about it, it's not. When I think
of freedom, what comes to mind is how many people died to gain us that freedom. They paid the ultimate price so that we could
be free. They paid with their lives. How can someone call that free? So many of us do, and I don't think we truly realize
or appreciate the sacrifices that these men and women, not some superhero, made.
I keep thinking about the war in Afghanistan right now. The people that are over there, they're fighting for the freedom
we have today. And they're not thinking about themselves, or what they can gain out of this, they're fighting so that their
kids can grow up knowing that they are free, just like their parents were. And they're thinking about how they want their
kids to not wonder, "Am I really free?" They want their kids to grow up with the same freedom they had. I know thats why I'd
be doing it. So many of us take freedom for granted. It's just been a way of
life to us. But, freedom, like all things can be snatched away. I think September 11th opened our eyes to that. We saw how
easily life could be taken away, and just the same way, our freedom can be taken away.
Isn't it sad to think that it took something as horrible and devastating as September 11, 2001 to make us sit up and realize
that we are Proud to be Americans and that we had to fight against terrorism? I'm sorry to say it, but there was terrorism
long before September 11th. What's even sadder, is that we can find it in our own beautiful country. I'm not sure what goes
through these peoples heads, but they must not appreciate all the men and women who died for them so they could be free.
So, you can ask us, "Is freedom really free?", but I ask you: Is anything in this life really and truly free?
God Bless the USA
